December 15th & 16th IN Blizzard

This blizzard was hyped up alot. Forcasters were calling for 6 to 10 inchs in north central Indiana. Very powerful low pressure system sitting over LA, with trailing cold front and warm front. Classic winter set-up. The main low was moving north east. There was a secound low situated nearer to IN. Overall this was a very complexe system with lots of details. A baraclinic leaf was starting to show up on satillite imagery. There was also a mid level jet of around 120 kts, with negative tilted short wave trough. The low further south was generating severe weather in the warm sector. Many tornados were reported along and just south of the warm front. Florida and Georgia got most of the severe weather. I am not sure on the exact pressure falls but it was hugh. Lots of lift was definitly being generated by these systems in connection with the short wave trough. Low level jet was pumping up warm moist air in a north west fashion. Creating tight temperature gradients that the low was following. LLJ was also creating a warm layer for the development of freezing rain in southern IN. These lines were very distinct i.e. the areas of different precip, quite a wintery mix. Because of the speed and direction of everything, this was a long even. Was forcasted to be longer than it actually was. the snow started around 6am Dec 15th and ended around 7am dec 16th. The wind really kicked end towards the end of the event, with gusts up to and around 35 to 40 mph. Where I am we had mostly snow, but their was also some ice pellets around 8 or 9pm on the 15th.

Below is one of the first pictures I took on day one. When everything was just getting started.

Below is the same street only at the end of the whole over hyped blizzard. As you can see their is definitly more snow, but not a whole lot more. And the sky is clear and blue. It was also a bit windy. Time was around, 1730z, that's around 12:30pm.

Me measuring the snow all over the place!

The snow mark is actually covering the depth. 6 inchs was the average. With some drifts of around a few inchs more and less.

Digging out!

Total snowfall! And as you can see, alot of snow fell. WOW! Some places saw more than a foot of snow. But in very limited areas. All in all it wasnt as bad as everyone made it out to be. I have a feeling though that we are going to have alot of snow this winter season. We have already had a decent amount of snow, and we still have 3 months to go!
